Loudspeaker Films and TEACHED Joins the Global #GivingTuesday Movement

Oakland,CA November 18, 2015– Loudspeaker Films has joined #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide. As a non-profit project, Loudspeaker's TEACHED film series is supported by donations and grants, with the backing of 250+ individual donors since its inception in 2009.

Occurring this year on December 1, #GivingTuesday helps to kick-off the holiday giving season and inspire people to give back in impactful ways to the charities and causes they support. All donations made to TEACHED are tax-deductible, thanks to fiscal sponsor the International Documentary Association.

The TEACHED short film series examines issues of race, equality and education, with a particular look at the experiences of African-American males. The first three TEACHED films, the award-winning TEACHED Vol. I, premiered in 2009 and has since been screened in over 100 festivals and special events. TEACHED Vol. II is currently in post-production and will premiere in its entirety in early 2016. Donations from this year's #GivingTuesday campaign will support outreach and impact of the films, ensuring their messages of transformation and hope reach target audiences in communities across the nation.

About TEACHED

Loudspeaker’s signature project is TEACHED, a series of short documentary films that examine the causes and consequences of the achievement gap, particularly between urban students of color and their peers. TEACHED films are short (10-20 min. each) to provide topical conversation starters for interactive screenings in which the films are interspersed with guest speakers, panel discussions, community-building and significant audience involvement.

Director/Producer Kelly Amis dedicates this innovative film project to Malik Smith, a boy from Washington D.C. who, like too many students of color in America, was labeled as needing "special education" at a very young age. Fortunately, before his passing a few months before his ninth birthday, Malik had the opportunity to attend a great school that believed in him and recognized his intellect and ability.

About #GivingTuesday

#GivingTuesday is a movement to celebrate and provide incentives to give—the 2015 iteration will be held on December 1, 2015. This effort harnesses the collective power of a unique blend of partners—nonprofits, businesses and corporations as well as families and individuals—to transform how people think about, talk about and participate in the giving season. #GivingTuesday inspires people to take collaborative action to improve their local communities, give back in better, smarter ways to the charities and causes they celebrate and help create a better world. #GivingTuesday harnesses the power of social media to create a global moment dedicated to giving around the world.

92Y − a cultural center in New York City that, since 1874, has been bringing people together around its core values of community service and giving back − conceptualized #GivingTuesday as a new way of linking individuals and causes to strengthen communities and encourage giving. Since 2012, online giving on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving has increased more than four-fold, based on findings by Blackbaud and the Indiana University’s Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, produced in partnership with the Case Foundation.
